Gregion Editor's Review

Gregion is a tiny real-time recording software for games, easy to use and powerful. It can record any DirectX or OpenGL based computer game (video and audio) including games that run in window mode. The supported output formats are AVI (compressed or lossless), WMV, RM, and MOV. With Gregion, is also possible to take screenshots (as BMP, JPG or PNG). The images are automatically named so you can take as many as you want – there is no need to paste into painting software and save every time you want to take a new shot.

To start recording your favorite game, basically you’ll have to run Gregion, set the output folder (where do you want the videos or screenshots to be saved) and then press the start button (or CTRL + F5 – by default). To stop recording, you’ll have to press the same hotkey or button as you did to start recording. It's that easy when you want to take a screenshot too: you’ll only have to press CTRL + F6 by default.

After that, you can see the video you’ve just recorded (by pressing the System Media Player) or the screenshot you just took (by pressing the System Image Viewer). At this point, there is only a step left (not absolutely necessary but still recommended) – you’ll have to optimize your video using Gregion Converter to minimize the size of the recorded video file (especially after Lossless capture which takes a lot of HDD space).

Pluses:You can apply codecs to the video stream in real time; you can include your user logo and date time in the video stream; it shows how many frames per second (FPS) you are getting in the corner of your screen; It’s free.

Drawbacks / flaws:Would be nice to be possible to edit the output video file.

In conclusion: I like it, it gets the job done and it does it pretty well.
